Understanding In a Car Crash.

Tonight I heard a car skid across pavement, and make contact with another car. It was so loud it might as well have been a bomb going off. We all barely looked at one another as we ran out the door, and down the stairs that lead to the parking lot. At first all I see are flashing lights, and the only movement I register is from the other residents running to find the source of the crash. Then the scene comes into focus. Right in front of our apartment there is a car over turned. It was hard to comprehend at first what exactly I was seeing. A man's head was hanging out the car window, and his arms were reaching to make contact with the ground. There's a noise, it almost sounds like a piece of machinery when it's not working correctly. Not a metallic sound, but more like a droning. There is no way I could ever completely and fully describe this sound, but it was nothing I had ever heard. What you hear in movies and on television isn't even close. This man was moaning continuously, and then finally, "help...help help help," was all anyone could make out.

I don't know whether or not he survived.

Tonight there was a car crash right outside my apartment building, and I have never been so close to another person's death. I have never been so close to understanding how completely fragile we all are.
